Happy Saturday

The sun shone brilliantly in Whitworth Park, Manchester yesterday. As per usual I turned up with my picnic blanket food and big white dog and waited for the plumbers to arrive.

Out of the six invited, 3 had contacted us to apologize for not being able to make it, but a great thank you goes to Vicky, Deb and Ruth who turned up ready to picnic. We had the added bonus of being interviewed by BBC Radio Manchester as well.

The interview went really well: here it is

BBC Radio Manchester 30-7-11

All in all, a good time was had by all and I especially love the way we come together to share food and talk about welcoming new Stopcocks Women Plumbers. The difference it makes to having other women plumbers to talk to, to share stories with and to help us all realise that being part of Stopcocks Women Plumbers is exciting, refreshing and a lucrative way to live the life you really really want

Brilliant Event

What a brilliant event!

The rain poured down, but the plumbers arrived. We convened at Henry’s cafe across the street and created a bit of interest in the bar staff. As we didn’t know what any of the plumbers looked like it was fun to see the faces of those women that weren’t plumbers as Mica waved my book around and asked the women that came in if they were plumbers.

The first meeting of the Stopcocks community of women plumbers took place on Sunday 12th June in rainy London. It was great to finally meet the women we had been talking to for some time on the phone and by email. These women are really impressive! They came from as far afield as Newbury and Norwich and had studied from Portsmouth to Cambridge. All fitted around their usual jobs, family and children. It was an honour to be with them.

We discussed the issues facing these women who had never met before. Each studying in their own college as the only woman left standing on their courses. We heard stories of unanswered emails, 100 cv’s going out. Ignored phone calls. But mostly, what this event highlighted for me was the lack of clarity around what is required.

These women are being told they can’t go out and be plumbers until they have their NVQ. They can’t get an NVQ until they have a ‘job’. Those jobs do not exist. (Bad enough for male students, female students have it EVEN worse). Then we find the NVQ courses are in fact the same as the technical certificate courses, but cost in some cases £2000 more to cover the assessment fee!

Then there’s the confusion about gas. Can a  plumber with a technical certificate become Gas Safe registered?

Watch this space as I try to find out the definitive answers.

Stopcocks is committed to creating the next generation of women plumbers. Despite the height of this mountain in front of us; we will prevail.

More events will be put on the calendar soon. Happy Stopcocks Summer everyone!

500 entrepreneurs gather to hear Hattie speak

In March 2011, I was asked to speak in front of 500 entrepreneurs in London’s Mermaid Theatre. I spoke about my passion to leave a legacy to change the way women are regarded in the plumbing industry. In order to make changes I needed to become a key person of influence. I talked about how the book has helped me to get listened to, and how that can help women to become, not only plumbers, but whatever they want. I blew them away actually.. Take a look

The Evidence is out there

If you are a female plumber reading this; you will know how much you are loved by your customers. You have no doubt heard many stories from them about disasters they’ve had, and how different it is having you in their homes.

This message needs to be broadcast on a wider scale. I was speaking to a researcher today. He told me about a trucking company owner who is bound by equal opportunities laws that means he has to employ women on an equal basis to men. The thing is, this man was over joyed by the women he employed. On a regular basis they would clean, the cabs of the truck, wipe down the greasy residues off the doors. They were just as competent (if not more so) than the guys, they put in extra hours and would do the little things the guys wouldn’t think about, like vacuum out the back of the truck after a delivery.

On speaking to colleges and trainers of women plumbers (and believe me I’ve done a lot of that recently) they consistently tell me that the women are acing all their studies. They turn up early to class and are often the last to leave. They practice more, and don’t submit a piece of work until they are sure it’s ‘perfect’. As students and work mates they are easy to get along with. They use their initiative, and don’t waste any of the time spent in college.

In conversations with merchants and suppliers, they say, when a woman comes in, she buys what she needs and then leaves. She doesn’t spend any time ‘hanging around’.

If you are a student reading this you’ll probably be wondering about whether you have a future in plumbing. The categorical answer is YES YOU DO.

Last month we had a meeting in which we decided; enough is enough. We have too many women contacting us that have spent time and money training, but are now finding they can’t complete their NVQ, because this system is letting them down.

We have this week launched a scheme to find a way to get you qualified. Stopcocks has launched the brand new ‘Friends of Stopcocks‘ scheme in London, Manchester and Leeds.

The scheme aims to get customers so that we can offer internships to trainees needing their NVQs signed off. You can find out about the scheme by clicking HERE

You can also help us to help you. I’m sure you have told your friends and family that you are training right? Well now you can tell them about the Friends of Stopcocks Scheme. It is for customers wanting bathroom refurbishments. They get the bathroom of their dreams at a discounted rate, you get your qualification signed off.

Tell us about yourself by filling in the form on the right. Tell your friends about the scheme.

Social Media is the new black

What a week it was in the Stopcocks camp last week. It was so hot that I found myself working from my garden office. I just happened to tweet and put a couple of pics up on facebook, when before you know it I was contacted by @shedworking. They write solely about people who work from their sheds. I love working from my shed and was very happy when he wanted to feature me on his blog. And here it is.

The point is, not that I was working from my shed. The point is that without my knowledge, someone else knew that I was working from my shed and was able to contact me. This is the power of Social Media. It is quick. When you join the business scheme as a new plumber we have dedicated social media junkies out there to make sure everybody can see you.

Not only that, but with our own channel on you tube each plumber gets to be seen as well. Social media has changed the way we do business. You can be advertised at a fraction of the cost, be seen by people you would never be able to get to by yourself, and that means we can get your business started at a fraction of the cost.
